Biostatistics is essential in interpreting scientific data that are generated in public health
research, epidemiology studies, biological experiments, clinical trials and various
medical research. Especially, it plays a critical part in testing potential infections,
evaluating vaccines, creating treatment plans and developing public policies under the
unprecedented global Covid-19 pandemic. With the pressing need for experts in
analyzing biomedical and public health data and an increasing interest among
undergraduate, graduate, clinicians and biologists, we believe that it is the right time for
Mizzou to invest in developing a Biostatistics certificate program.
A Biostatistics certificate program has great potential to benefit the department, college,
and university in variety of ways. We have observed strong interest in biostatistics from
not only undergraduate or graduate students majored in biology, psychology, public
health and social science but also mature investigators and clinicians who want to
advance their quantitative skills and conduct high quality research in the big data era.
The goal of this certificate program is to help people from biomedical or public health
background disentangle the data received and make valid inferences for real life
problems. Also it will help people from other fields, such as environmental science or
computer engineering, understand biostatistics principles and better collaborate with
other scientists and researchers.
