Discover Undergraduate Research in Statistics at Mizzou!

Team Keno Spring 2023

Keno Project

This undergraduate project discovered that across many state lotteries, odds and probabilities listed for the game Keno were not accurate as reported.  Student researchers are going state by state to determine the most accurate presentation of these odds so that players in each state can rely on accurate information prior to playing.

Who can participate in this project: All undergraduate students, regardless of their major, are welcome. In previous semesters, students from strategic communications, statistics, mathematics, engineering, business, psychology and computer science made contributions. During the beginning of the fall semester, new student researchers are welcome to join. Contact Dr. McIntosh, mcintoshMJ@missouri.edu, of your potential interest in the project.

Meetings: Tuesdays, 4 p.m.

Where New Student Researchers Start: Learn all probabilities associated with the game Keno. Reach out to State Lotteries to inform them that their listed odds of winning statements are mislabel. Help create posters for research week(s).

Where Returning Student Researchers Are Going: Continue reaching out to State Lotteries. Create posters for research week(s). Draft manuscripts for possible publication.

Current submission for possible publication (Nov 2023). “What are the odds that the lottery has incorrect odds?” by J Rollinson, B Danley, J Couch, C Roach, M McIntosh

L2 Project

This is a self-paced, self-learning project for Learning LaTeX. LaTeX is a free, open source typesetting program widely used for the publication of scientific and technical documents. If you are in an academic STEM field, LaTeX is the standard tool used for creating documents and presentations.

Who can participate in this project: All University students. This will be a free Canvas course through the Statistics Department. Professors Grieshop, Christiansen, and McIntosh will be available to answer questions as needed.

When will this project begin: The L2 Project is expected to begin in the fall of 2024. Check back often for more details.
